Garbage Disposal Repair: Get the Trash Out
Garbage disposals are pretty straightforward devices. They operate on a motor system that circulates rotating blades under your sink to grind up food particles and other waste. However, since these small motorized appliances are used so often in the home, they can easily get jammed or clogged. And since they are attached to the most heavily used item in the house—the kitchen sink—it's important to keep this unit up and running. Here are a few tips to remember when it comes to garbage disposal repair.
Garbage Disposal Repair
A garbage disposal can run into many kinds of problems, some of which can be easily fixed and others that may need more advanced training. You'll have to decide which you're most capable of, but for safety's sake, never take unnecessary risks if you're not qualified to do so. Here are some common troubles you may encounter:
Overheating: If you flip the switch and your garbage disposal doesn't even hum, then it's probably overheated due to overfilling and has tripped itself off. The first step is to look under the unit and locate the red ?reset? button. If nothing happens once you push the button, then locate your circuit box and see if a breaker has been tripped. This is a common problem and something that should be done on one's own: no use paying a professional $75 to push a button.
Jamming: If the unit is humming but still isn't working, then it probably means it's jammed (the impellers are stuck). First step, never put your hand down into the drain and into grinding chamber. This may seem like an obvious bit of advice, but it's everyone's natural instinct to reach into the problem and try to dislodge items by hand, so try to overcome this gut reaction. Second, turn off circuit breakers to the unit and then remove bottom housing to dislodge the blockage from beneath. Though this isn't a difficult fix, if you don't know what you're doing, it's best to hire a professional since these impellers are able to grind more than just food, but fingers as well.
Last Option: If neither of these seems to be the problem, then it's a more serious fix and it may be best to simply buy a new unit. Check your manufacturer's warranty to see if it is covered. If not, garbage disposals aren't too expensive (a few hundred dollars), but you have to also think about installation. Though they come with homeowner's instructions, these appliances take time to research and install, so it may be best not to bet on your own skills when it comes to plumbing and just hire a professional.
Avoiding Garbage Disposal Repair
Never Evers: Never grind fibrous foods, coffee grounds, or eggshells, bones, glass, rubber or metal in your garbage disposal. Never overfill it. And never use chemical drain cleaners to unclog it: they won't work and you'll be stuck with a sink full of toxic liquids.
Always, Always: Always run cold water while in use. Always have a drain strainer to avoid blockage. And if items get stuck in the unit for too long and your sink begins to stink, make it smell better by grinding up a small lemon peel with ice cubes while running warm water.

A Water Heater Primer
Few appliances seem less important when they operate properly, or create more of a stir when they fail, than home water heaters. That being the case, it's important that you purchase the best unit you can and have it installed properly by a reputable plumber. However, you may not be privy to the wide range of choices available to you when it comes to water heaters.
Standard Fare
The most common type of heater on the market is a conventional storage model, though it is also the least efficient. These water heaters heat a tank full of water—anywhere from 20 to 80 gallons at a time—that you draw from when you turn on the hot water at the faucet. These models are probably the best choice for large households, since they can supply hot water to multiple sources without going cold. Keep in mind, however, that you are sacrificing efficiency for convenience. Storage heaters experience standby heat loss, meaning your heater constantly has to fire up to keep the water in the tank at the proper temperature. In simple terms, you pay a lot to heat water over and over again when the tank sits idle. Make sure your heater is well-insulated if you choose this type of model, and you'll be able to keep this heat loss to minimum.
Demand Heaters
The other popular option when it comes to heating your H2O is a tankless style heater. Demand water heaters run cold water directly past a heating element when you turn on the faucet, eliminating any standby heat loss that occurs by storing water in tanks. These heaters don't do as well in high demand situations, however, since there is a limited flow of hot water they can produce. You can counter that by installing multiple units, if you're set on demand heaters over conventional storage models.
Heat Pump, Tankless Coil, and Indirect Water Heaters
Heat pump, tankless coil, and indirect heaters also forego using a tank, though they utilize pre-existing heating sources in your home to do the work for you. This can mean circulating water through your heat pump, or past your furnace or boiler. These are great options in the colder months, since those appliances are already running around the clock, though they can lead to unnecessary and wasteful operation of your heating appliances when the weather turns warm.

Water Heater
Green Alternatives
If you live in one of the warmer areas of the country and get a lot of sun, consider a solar water heater for your hot water needs. There are multiple varieties of the eco-friendly alternatives, but the basic principle remains that you're heating your water with the sun, after which it is stored in a storage tank for use. Some combine forces with fuel based water heating methods while others are solar all the way. Regardless, a good solar heater is one of the most cost effective hot water solutions out there. The only real downside—cloudy days.
Final Thoughts
No matter which kind of heater you choose, remember that hot water costs money anyway you cut it. Conserve its use by not running hot water through faucets when it isn't necessary, take shorter showers, wash clothes and dishes in cold water when possible, and turn down your hot water heater when you're going to be gone for extended periods of time. Also, talk to an appliance retailer or plumber about matching the proper heater to your lifestyle, locale, and habits in order to get the most out of your new appliance.

The Basics of Gas Appliances
Most of us today are used to the buzz and whirr of electric appliances. They're safe, easy to use, and with a simple plug-in, they're instantly ready to go. However, due to their convenience, there is also a cost down the road: they guzzle a lot of energy. Most people assume it's no big deal since electricity is so cheap anyway, but it's not that cheap when you add up the total amount you're expending to complete a simple task. Natural gas appliances, on the other hand, seem expensive at first but since they're quicker and more efficient, they can actually save you money in the long run.
LPG or Go Natural?
They often come in two varieties: LPC (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or natural gas. Both serve the same purpose, but they have different chemical properties. LPG contains propane, which can be compressed into liquid form and easily transported in a tank (it's often used in grills but can be found anywhere). However, natural gas comes directly from the earth and is hardwired into your house through underground lines. Both are non-renewable resources, making them a bit more expensive, but since they both produce a flame and burn extremely hot while in operation, they allow machines to function at a much faster rate so they complete their jobs in no time.
Common Gas Appliances
The most common device is a water heater. When you run out of warm water, it's probably because your pilot has blown out and needs relighting. Many gas appliances have a pilot light constantly running that acts as a primer and controls the flame size (though new models turn on the flame through electronic starters which is safer). But with a flame, water heaters can quickly warm the tank and save ý the cost of electronic units. Here are some other common machines around the home:
Dryer/Washer: Drawing air in through the burner, these units then distribute heat to the tumbling drum and cost less to operate since they use a quicker cycling time.
Stove: The burners use actual fire instead of heated coils, allowing pans to warm up extremely fast, saving you a third of the time. Again, if pilot lights make you nervous, newer models use electric ignition. Plus, these stoves are easy to clean since you don't have to work around and underneath curled coils.
Fireplace: No more messy ash, unsafe sparks, or chopping wood. Just flip a switch to get instant results. Plus, with ceramic logs, the hearth still offers an authentic appearance.
Refrigerator: Unlike electric models, these fridges don't use Freon but instead hydrogen and ammonia water. Plus, they have no moving parts, such as compressors. But they use steel pipes instead of copper, which means they require expert experience for installation.
Anywhere, Anytime
Even if you have electronic devices, it's always a smart idea to have a gas-operated generator around in case of power outage. But to avoid the hassle of electrical failure, you can always find a gas appliance replacement. Ovens, heat pumps, space heaters, pool heaters, you name it, it's available. Plus, if you don't want to use LPG, you can hardwire outdoor units directly to the house. Why not hook up a grill to the home, allowing it to heat up quickly? Plus, it's handier than messy briquettes or propane tanks, which run out all the time. Hook up your exterior lights, ignite your fire pit and patio fireplace, or maybe even invest in a standup heating unit for those chilly summer nights.
Gas Appliance Repair
First off, if these devices aren't properly installed or occasionally inspected, they could be dangerous. A big threat is when they're left on but don't ignite, which causes carbon monoxide poisoning. It can't be smelled, tasted, or detected and therefore it builds up without notice. So make sure your equipment is checked annually (some come with warranties or service packages for inspection) and buy a detector for the house. Other gas appliance repairs could be a blown pilot light, a broken thermocouple, or a defective safety valve. Since fridges use steel pipes, they could rust and leak. And since these problems necessitate specific knowledge and experience, always hire an expert (doing it yourself is dangerous and illegal). But make sure the repairman is qualified with the Council for Registered Gas Installers, which requires by law that they respond in cases of emergency. Some areas even involve permits for installation, so make sure you hire a pre-screened professional to take care of any gas appliance repair.

Finding the Right Electric Range for Your Kitchen
Choosing a range for your kitchen is not an easy process for most homeowners. Ranges can be electric or gas-powered, freestanding or slide-in; there are ranges with electronic controls, and, of course white, black, or stainless steel ranges. Naturally, each choice you make comes with certain advantages and disadvantages. Cost is often a big factor, but it can be complicated if you're working within a budget for an entire kitchen remodel. Knowing what different model electric ranges can offer will help you prioritize your budget and your decision-making process in general.
Gas v. Electric Ranges
Many homeowners prefer gas ranges, but electric ranges are a lot cheaper to run. They provide a more consistently applicable heat, making cooking and baking times easier to control. Gas ranges also present the potential risks of gas leakage and fire, if the pilot light goes out. Plus, flat version electric ranges will save you a lot of cleaning and maintenance time. For the more serious and experienced cook, a gas range is probably the right choice, but for the convenience needed in a fast-paced lifestyle, the electric range is the way to go.
Drop in/Slide in Ranges v. Freestanding Ranges
Slide in ranges (also called drop in ranges) are installed to make the surface of the range level with the counter top. Freestanding ranges are just that—freestanding. They won't create the same sleek lines as a slide in range, but they are cheaper, easier to pull out and clean, and allow for simple repairs. Slide in ranges are more convenient in that they have no rear console. With all the controls at the front of the cooking surface, you'll never have to reach over your cooking food and scalding pots and pans to adjust the settings.
For a sleeker, more contemporary look, glass top ranges offer unmatched beauty. They are available in both freestanding and drop in ranges. The sacrifice you make for the sharper look is that glass top ranges require more diligent cleaning. You'll need to plan on cleaning your range after just a couple uses to avoid stains. Of course, if you frequently clean your range, anyway, this may not be a problem. You should also check your cookware before purchasing a glass top range, as some cookware isn't meant for this kind of surface.

Kitchen Remodel
Appearance and Style of Your Electric Range
White is the traditional color for ranges, but black and especially stainless steel appliances tend to be coveted by modern homeowners. Mostly, this decision boils down to what will look best for your kitchen. Ranges vary widely in cost, from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand. They can have any number of additional features to meet your particular needs, including self-cleaning ovens, digital controls, warmer drawers, clocks, and control lockouts to prevent children from turning the range on without supervision.
Whatever you need your electric range to do, there's probably a company or kitchen remodeling contractor who can find it for you. Just remember to ask yourself what it is you truly need from your kitchen. You don't want to splurge on a bunch of superfluous options, if it means another area of your kitchen is going to suffer.

Dryer Vent 101
A dryer vent is much more important than most homeowners realize. A properly installed dryer vent, using the right materials, practically eliminates poor dryer performance, increased wear and tear on the appliance, and the very real fire hazards that go hand in hand with poor vent installation. For all these reasons, it's important to know the ins and outs of this often overlooked home improvement.
Rule #1: Always Run Your Dryer Vent to the Outdoors
Unfortunately, one of the biggest mistakes homeowners make, and installers try to get away with, is venting dryers into basements, crawlspaces, attics, or garages. This is a very bad idea! For starters, it makes for a big mess: dryer lint everywhere. But from a safety standpoint it's also really the pits. By blowing fine particles of cotton and polyester into an area that is rarely cleaned or maintained, you drastically increase the risk of fire. It's akin to packing your attic with kindling and then hoping no one lights a match. And from a moisture standpoint, it's a bad call as well. The increased humidity in these enclosed areas makes for the perfect breeding ground for both mold and mildew to develop.
Rule #2: Never Use Plastic Vinyl Dryer Vent Hose
One of the most common mistakes homeowners make when venting their dryers is to use the economically attractive plastic vinyl vent hose. Again, this is a fire waiting to happen. Lint collects in vent hoses regardless of the material you use, but if the dryer overheats and the lint ignites in a vinyl tube, the hose is going to go up with it and the house often follows. By installing steel tubes and aluminum hose, you decrease friction within the tube (meaning less lint buildup to start with), and you provide a fire barrier between a lint fire and the rest of your residence.
Rule #3: Perform a Dryer Vent Cleaning Once a Year
Perhaps by now you're sensing a common theme throughout: lint accumulation, wherever it is, is bad. It cuts down on the efficiency of your dryer, will wear it out sooner, and worst of all, it presents a huge fire risk. The only way to ensure lint won't ever be a problem is to perform a dryer vent cleaning at least once a year. A vent brush is the tool of choice, though many homeowners choose to hire this job out. Consider adding this chore onto your annual duct cleaning. Most cleaning services will be happy to perform this necessary upkeep as part of a larger routine maintenance call.
Rule #4: Not Just Any Vent Will Do
The final thing to take into consideration is the type of outdoor vent you want to purchase. There are two main considerations to entertain here. First of all, all the lint has to get outdoors. Secondly, you don't want any critters, or weather, using your dryer vent to get in. In order to meet all these requirements, look for a four inch vent with louvered doors if you're venting out the side of your home, and be sure to get a rain proof vent cap if you're venting out the roof.
Remember, proper dryer vent installation isn't a laughing matter. In fact, it can easily be a life or death matter. That being the case, make sure your dryer is venting properly, and that your vent is built from the proper materials. If not, talk to an appliance repairman or other contractor about coming in and doing the work necessary to get your dryer venting as it should

Refrigerators
Electric Refrigerators
An electric refrigerator uses the evaporation of a liquid to absorb heat. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat and creates the cool feeling. The liquid, or refrigerant, used in a refrigerator evaporates at an extremely low temperature so it can create freezing temperatures inside the refrigerator. Modern refrigerators work use a regenerating cycle to reuse the same refrigerant over and over again.
Gas Refrigerators
If you own or use a refrigerator where electricity is not available, chances are you have a gas-powered or propane-powered refrigerator. Gas refrigerators have no moving parts and use gas or propane as their primary source of energy. They are also odd because they use heat, in the form of burning propane, to produce the cold inside the refrigerator.
A gas refrigerator uses ammonia as the coolant, and it uses water, ammonia and hydrogen gas to create a continuous cycle for the ammonia.
Refrigerator Categories
Refrigerators are categorized according to the way frost is removed from them.
Standard Refrigerator
Standard fridges defrost when the power is turned off and the frost is permitted to melt slowly on its own or with the aid of pans of hot water placed in the freezer.
Cycle-Defrost Refrigerator
With a cycle-defrost fridge, a heater is turned on when the temperature on the evaporator reaches a preset point, keeping the refrigerator compartment free of frost. However, the freezer requires manual defrosting every few months.
Frost-Free Refrigerator
Frost from both compartments is continually melted away by a heater that turns on for 20 to 30 minutes, two or three times a day. This type of refrigerator offers the ultimate in convenience, though it's somewhat more prone to problems and is considered less energy-efficient.
Refrigerator Maintenance
Most refrigerators have more than one light. Replacement is easiest when at least one bulb is still working. Be sure to take the burn-out bulb with you to the hardware store to make sure you buy the same type.
Whenever frost gets to be 1/4-inch thick, it's time to defrost. Never use ice picks or similar tools to loosen ice.
Some refrigerator shelves contain cooling fluids. These racks take longer to defrost. Don't force the process, as the racks are easily damaged. Every year or two, vacuum underneath and behind the unit. After unplugging the unit, use a crevice tool or a feather duster to help you clean the coil and all the metal parts. You may have to remove a panel to get access. This will make your unit run more efficiently and last longer. Keep the door seals and the surfaces they close against clean. This will reduce energy consumption and extend the life of the seal.
Though older model dishwashers are notorious for leaving particles of food stuck to glasses and plates if you don't rinse them properly beforehand, for modern dishwashers, rinsing the dishes is unnecessary and a waste of water and time. Most dishes can go from the table to the dishwasher without a stop at the sink. Some dishwashers also come equipped with special cleaning cycles that automatically adjust by the soil level of the dishes in order to save water and energy.
Getting the Most from Your Dishwasher
Wait until you have a full load before running the dishwasher so as not to waste water and energy. When loading the dishwasher, make sure no dishes obstruct the rotating spray arms. There's an arm that spins under the bottom rack, another above the top rack and often a third that telescopes up through the bottom rack to spin just under the top rack. Make sure to load more fragile items in the top rack. The highest-pressure jets are directed at the lower rack to help clean pots and utensils.
If you have a garbage disposal, make sure you run it before running the dishwasher. A clogged drain can cause a flood when the dishwasher drains. If your dishwasher has a strainer or scrap bin in the bottom, clear it before running each load. If your dishwasher has a water heating option, use it.
The dry cycle uses a lot of energy. During the winter months, when the air in the house is generally dry, you don't need to use this option. Instead, when the dishwasher stops, open it and pull out both racks. Everything will be dry in about an hour.
Dishwasher Troubleshooting and Dishwasher Repairs
A dishwasher is composed of several different systems and many parts; dishwasher repair is a complex task when it comes to fixing the mechanical or electrical components inside the unit. There are, however, several problems where calling a dishwasher repair person might be a waste of money. Here are a few common dishwasher problems (and simple dishwasher repairs) that handy homeowners may be able to do themselves.
Most cleaning problems are caused by the dishwasher not getting enough wash water, so the water-inlet valve is often to blame. This valve is usually at the bottom left or right of the dishwasher behind the lower access panel. It's the device with the main water line from the house, a rubber tube to the dishwasher, and two wires attached to it. If the water-inlet valve is defective, it needs to be replaced.
Most modern dishwashers have self-cleaning filters that don't need any routine cleaning, but some have filters in the bottom of the dishwasher that you need to clean periodically. You don't need any tools to remove the filter, and cleaning it is easy. Consult your owner's manual to determine which type you have and its maintenance requirements. If your filter is clogged, it may be causing an insufficient cleaning problem.
Some dishwashers have a valve (or gate) that should open only during draining. If debris gets lodged in the valve, it can't close properly, so water drains out during the wash cycle. Most dishwashers drain into the garbage disposal. If yours does that, listen for water flowing into the disposal during the wash cycle. If you can hear it, the drain valve may be clogged.
There's a spray arm at the bottom of your dishwasher, which may have a tall spray tube mounted to the center of it. There may also be a spray arm located directly beneath the upper rack of dishes and/or above the upper rack. If debris is blocking the holes in the spray arms where the water comes out, it could cause unsatisfactory results. Regularly inspect each of the spray arms and clean out the holes with hot vinegar and a safety pin.
While these tasks are relatively easy, dishwasher repairs aren't always so simple. If you cannot easily identify the problem, or are at all uncomfortable with performing any of the above tasks yourself, it's time to call in a pro.
Dishwasher Water Temperature
To get the best cleaning results, the water entering your dishwasher needs to be hot. Try running the hot water in your kitchen sink for about 30 seconds to heat it before starting the dishwasher. Also, if possible, select a higher wash or rinse temperature to see if it helps.
To check the temperature of the hot water that comes from your kitchen faucet use a waterproof thermometer. If the water isn't 120 degrees Fahrenheit, your dishwasher may have trouble getting your dishes clean. You could increase the temperature of the hot water to the whole house by adjusting the hot water heater thermostat. However, to reduce the risk of scalding, don't set the hot water heater temperature higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Hot Water Dispenser Repair
Hot water dispensers normally keep on working without any sort of routine maintenance.
There are, however, occasional hot water dispenser problems that may occur:
Problem: Hot water is leaking from the faucet.
< b>A little hot water leaking from the faucet from time to time is normal. Water increases in volume as it heats, so a small amount of water may drip from the faucet to relieve the pressure inside the water tank under the sink.
If the leak is continuous, though, the shut-off valve needs to be repaired. That usually requires the help of a qualified technician.
Problem: The water is too hot.
Solution: The temperature control on residential hot water dispensers is normally factory-set. But, you can usually set it to a different temperature. Consult your owner's manual to learn how to set yours.
To avoid scalding, don't set the temperature above 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Problem: Poor water pressure.
Solution: The amount of water coming from the hot water dispenser is primarily determined by the amount of water entering the tank below. If the water flow is unusually slow, though, the incoming water may be obstructed—either a valve isn't open all the way, or there's something blocking the tank output or faucet.
Savin' Space with Pocket Doors
Pocket doors are doors that slide into a wall instead of opening on a hinge like most conventional doors. They have been used for over a century in order to save space, both in cramped areas and in the central areas of Victorian style homes in order to close off large areas such as sitting rooms and dens. If you're looking for a space saving solution in closets, bathrooms or in larger homes with interior French doors, these innovative door solutions are the answer you've been looking for.
Where Did it Go?
The benefit of this type of door is obvious. Traditional swinging doors hung on a hinge can take up as much as 10 square feet of your living space just to accommodate the space they need to swing open and closed. A pocket door, on the other hand, simply slides into a frame installed within the wall, freeing up the space that a conventional door occupies. They are particularly suited to cramped, small areas, such as half-baths and small closets, where a swinging door takes up valuable space and often is an inconvenience to those using them. And in more wide open homes where French doors are often installed between living areas, they free up valuable space for furniture and foot traffic.
Quiet as a Mouse
One of the major complaints of this style of door in the past has been that older versions ran on steel runners and rollers and were noticeably noisy in comparison to their hinged counterparts. Not the case anymore. The runners are still made of solid steel, but the most common rollers are now made of a hard nylon material, reducing the noise they make when the door is opened or shut. Deluxe ball bearing rollers are also available that reduce the noise to almost nothing.
The innovations in runner technology have also alleviated one of the other drawbacks of these types of doors that arose mid-century, when poor products often resulted in doors that jumped the tracks inside the wall. Modern doors rarely have this problem because of the high quality products currently available on the market.

Pocket Door
Not for Everywhere
The one drawback of these doors is that they can't be used just anywhere. Because they necessitate a special frame to house them, several factors must be taken into account before they are installed.
Obviously they will only work where there is enough interior wall space to house the door, but you also need to take into account things such as electrical wiring, plumbing, and ductwork, as the space needed for the door and frame won't be able to accommodate these features of your home.
Finally, while the frame is plenty strong to be installed in most interior walls, it is not as strong as regular framing. That being the case, you can't install a pocket door in areas where extra strength is needed, such as load bearing walls or walls where heavier home features such as cabinets are already installed.
A Few Extra Thoughts
While these innovative doors are convenient as a space saving alternative, they also have other benefits. They are handicapped accessible and make it easier for those in wheelchairs to maneuver around a home, and some of the more novel designs include multiple panel glass doors for luxury homes that allow the homeowner to open up an entire wall to the outdoors when the weather permits. Regardless of your need, a cramped bathroom or a sprawling great room, pocket doors are a convenient, attractive and space saving alternative door option.

Golden Glide: Sliding Closet Doors
Bad experiences with sticking, unstable sliding closet doors can be a real turn off. The fact is, though, that modern sliding doors are leaps and bounds ahead of their ancestors. Today's sliding door hardware is built for durability and efficiency. Many manufacturers carry a no stick, no slip warranty. Those looking to spruce up their bedroom should take a look at what styles of sliding closet doors are available, and the changes in design that have made them more desirable. Types of Sliding Closet Doors
There are three basic designs for sliding doors. A single bifold door is actually two pieces of wood or metal joined at a seam running down its middle; it opens by folding at this seam. Bifold doors often come in pairs, which makes a total of four separate pieces. A bypass door is usually made of two separate units that slide in front or behind the other, depending on which one you are moving. Think patio door. Bypass doors, however, can have three or four pieces to cover large spaces. The pocket door, an ingenious little invention, is a door that slides into a wall when not in use. Sliding Door Benefits
Having a sliding closet door is beneficial in many ways. Sliding doors add beauty and value to your home. Mirrored doors in the bedroom make getting ready easier and also add a feeling of greater space. While conventional doors come in many different styles and finishes, a glass or mirrored one could be expensive or hard to find. Sliding doors are especially convenient for closets that are set up horizontally because they will allow access to more of its contents at a glance. If the doors are made of clear glass, you can see the entire content without even opening the door! Hardware and Installation
In most cases, installing a sliding closet door is easier than it sounds. This is especially true if you are replacing an old sliding door with a new one.
Those replacing a conventional door with a sliding one should first consider the bifold design as it will be the easiest to put in. The sliding door hardware can be installed and the door hung by a DIY. As with any other door, its durability and performance will vary from brand to brand, as will the price. Conventional door replacement is also well suited to pocket door installation. A pocket door is truly a space saver as it takes up literally no floor space when it is open. The installation and hardware, however, are more difficult to deal with. Those without a fair amount of experience should leave this one to the professionals. If you are thinking of replacing a bypass door, a new bypass door might easily be popped right in. Since sliding door hardware has improved so much, though, it is wise when putting in a replacement bypass door to purchase new hardware, too. It's cheap and will greatly improve the door's functionality.

Brighten Your Home with Sliding Glass Doors
Is your living room or kitchen a bit gloomy? Or do you have a beautiful backyard landscape that remains hidden from inside the house? These problems are probably due to the lack of windows in your home. Additional light in any room can make it look bigger, more open, and bright. Plus, you are then able to have a better view of your backyard, garden, or patio. Though creating a window space in a wall is certainly possible, another more affordable option is to replace you entryways and exits with sliding glass doors. These doors not only provide windows, they also make for easy entrances onto decks, porches, or patios.
Different Designs
Sliding glass doors have come a long way in the past few years. They no longer use clunky plastic panes and trim. Today, these units come in many different design options. Maybe you want multiple doors joined together; or maybe you want them small and subtle. Would you like them to come in aluminum, vinyl, woods, metal, or fiberglass? Do you want them top-hung from your entryway in order to avoid any dirt, leaves, or debris in the glide track? As you can see, the options are limitless in terms of style and design, so the difficult part about investing in sliding glass doors is actually choosing the best fit due to their wide selection.
Protection
Just because these doors are made of glass doesn't mean they are fragile. In fact, they offer quite a bit of protection to you and your home. If you live in an area with a lot of insects you may want to select a door with screens that open and shut so you can let in fresh air yet still create a barrier from unwanted pests. You can also install double pane doors in order to soundproof your home from outdoor disturbances.
If you choose to layer your doors (installing two doors with a small gap of air between them) for additional security, you can also create a natural form of insulation, thereby driving down your utility bills. Though people often think that these doors leak heat in the winter and increase the temperature during summer months, if you buy appropriate weather stripping and insulated glass, you can in fact generate more efficiency in your energy costs, especially if you invest in glazed glass with a low-E coating.
Accessory Options
There used to be limitations to these doors, but now with modern-day innovations, they can serve the same functions as any other doorway. You can still install pet-doors with specialized systems. And if you're afraid that they are too convenient in that there is too much easy access, there are now even security options for parents who want to apply setting restrictions for kids. These systems only allow the door to slide open to a certain degree, making them exceptionally childproof.
Plus, if you don't want your home exposed to nosy neighbors all the time but don't want to cover up with curtains and shades either, there several alternatives: etched glass, stained glass, and even adhesive-free vinyl film designs that stick right to the door are ways to let the light in but keep wandering eyes out.
If you have the opposite problem in that you wish more light could enter the room, then folding doors are maybe your best option: doors which can open up the entire wall to a sunroom, an enclosed porch, or a patio, yet can also close at your convenience. And as always, there a many traditional window treatments to choose from: horizontal and vertical blinds, sashes and curtains, or maybe decorative screens that can cover the window whenever desired.
Sliding glass doors have been re-invented to fit any need in your home. Imagine yourself in your kitchen or living room on a winter morning, feeling the sun's rays on your face yet avoiding frostbite from the outdoor air. These innovations allow you to have the best of both worlds while still remaining efficiently within your budget.

Wrought Iron Installations Beautify Your Home
Wrought iron is some of the most durable and decorative material you can use for home improvement installations. It is, by nature, customized and hand-crafted. Naturally, this makes it expensive, but it also makes it an excellent choice to create a distinctive and ornate touch to your home. The most common wrought iron installation is wrought iron fencing. Too often, though, the amount of required material makes this project too expensive for many homeowners, especially since decorative aluminum fencing has become widely available for your fencing installation. Other smaller projects can give your home the same austere feel to your home at a more manageable strain on your budget.
Wrought Iron Door
A wrought iron doors are one of the best ways to create the distinctiveness that wrought iron promises. A custom wrought iron door can actually be trademarked for you so you know it's one of a kind. The design is tailored made to enhance the pre-existing architectural style of your home. They can be minutely-detailed or crafted with broad curving strokes or a simpler, vertically-lined pattern. Many homeowners choose to install their wrought iron door for their front entryway to maximize its visibility, but wrought iron doors can be a good idea for anywhere in the exterior or interior of your home.
Wrought Iron Railings
Wrought iron railings are the perfect installation to take advantage of wrought iron's personality. Whether you want a railing for your deck, stairs, balcony, patio, or pool, a railing often needs to be customized for the dimensions of that area of the home. A balcony just isn't a balcony without a wrought iron railing. Your stairs are just like any other stairs without putting your own touch on it. Wrought iron railings also work for the interior or exterior of your home. Sturdy and elegant at the same time, wrought iron makes for the perfect accent for any number of living spaces and decorating styles.
Wrought Iron Chandelier
The wrought iron chandelier is great for the homeowner who likes the idea of a chandelier without the precious or dainty like of the crystal chandelier. It says, I know what elegance is without ramming it down your throats. Wrought iron chandeliers are also one of the few wrought iron installations, where choosing wrought iron is actually going to save you quite a bit of money. An aluminum fence is going to be significantly cheaper than wrought iron. On the other hand, a quality crystal chandelier is likely to run you several thousand dollars, where a comparable-sized wrought iron chandelier may only cost a couple hundred dollars.
Regardless of your situation, chances are somewhere in your home is a place waiting to be complimented with a wrought iron installation. It's a classic, durable, and elegant material that is sure to add value to your home for years and years to come.

Accordion Doors Open Up Options
The most interesting concept behind accordion doors is that they are rarely used as actual entryways and exits. Most of the time, these folding barriers are used as temporary walls or partitions. Though they can certainly be used as traditional opening-and-closing entryways, they are most often found between rooms due to their light construction, easy fold-away storage option, and their interesting, wood design.
However, these products now come in a large variety and offer many different possibilities to homeowners and businesses which have been using them to effectively open up or close off large spaces in order to suit daily, individual needs.
Dividing the Space
There are many unique places where you could install an accordion door, and whether you own a business, work in an office, or own a home, these devices allow for a lot of versatility when it comes to both separating and sharing a space.
Closets: If you have unsightly closets in your bedroom or in high-traffic living space, these creased partitions are a great way to quickly cover-up the mess without all the extra expense of traditional doors.
Sleeping Quarters: Do you have a small apartment or house where one room encroaches on the next? Well these temporary room-separaters are an efficient way to block off areas that may need more privacy at certain times of the day, yet can be easily removed to add space a home when desired.
Kitchens: In a home, restaurant, or bar, you may find that the smells, heat, sounds, and unpleasant mess of the kitchen can intrude on your dining area. With the quick pull of the folding partition, all these unattractive nuisances can be put out of sight and mind while eating.
Conference Rooms: In businesses, corporations, and universities, the need to rearrange large spaces for specific needs is essential. That is why these room dividers come in all shapes, sizes, and materials (sometimes even with high-tech electronic track systems) which can make an auditorium into a cozy conference room or a small classroom into a giant lecture hall.
Overall, this versatility in the home or office keeps you from making major investments in remodeling projects with just a few creative fixes supplied by accordion doors.

Keeping This In, Keeping That Out
When dividing living areas, other peripheral benefits arise from the alteration. Though your intention is to simply segregate a room, you're also creating a barrier and gaining control over your own space and the things that belong in it.
Climate Control: By closing off unused areas of your home, you are now able to trap in the heat or cool air. Just like any other entryway, these partitions help control your climate by keeping in the desired air temperature. However, instead of just an exterior door barricading you from the outdoors, you now get to control the actual airflow throughout your house. This can actually help on utility bills since you won't be wasting energy on unused spaces.
Sound Insulation: You can also buy acoustical accordion doors made out of specialty materials that allow for sound insulation. These folding partitions no longer have to be flimsy imitation wood; they can now be made out of sturdy hardwood, vinyl, or other synthetic materials to help keep out the noise from other areas of the home.

Exterior Doors: The Easy Way Out
A home's entry door is one of the first things people notice about a house. Its color, style, and condition are a big part of how a property looks from the outside. A stylish, well-maintained exterior door can set a house apart from those around it.
Functionality
An exterior door has the tough job of keeping the outside out and the inside in. It is regularly pelted by precipitation, baked in harsh sun, and dusted by wind and dirt. Since the entry door is the first door visitors use in a home, it's a good idea to make sure it works as it should. These exterior doors are exposed to more harsh conditions than their interior brethren.
If an entry door is made of wood, it is likely to swell, shrink, and bow over time. This will cause the door to stick at times, and at other times leave room for a draft. The best way to prevent this is to make sure that your door is properly sealed before it is installed. If bowing is already present, a good storm door can eliminate drafts (if installing a storm door, be careful to make sure that it hinges on the same side as the existing door). A door that sticks can be shaved and sanded, then resealed. A fiberglass door won't have the same problems as a wooden one. High end fiberglass doors require very little maintenance, and do a good job recreating the look and feel of a wood door, though they are a bit more expensive.
Appearance
Both wood and fiberglass entry doors will need to be touched up every few years to keep them looking their best. If the door is exposed to a lot of direct sunlight, make sure that you use a paint or finish that is formulated to absorb ultra violet light. This will help the color last longer. If a wood exterior door is exposed to a lot of rain and moisture, plan on resealing it on all surfaces (including top and bottom) with high quality paint or varnish. Holes made by screws or nails can also be sealed.
Exterior Door Options
If you're thinking about replacing your current exterior door, there are a few different options to consider. The wood door is, of course, the most common and most traditional. They require a fair amount of care, but a well maintained one can be both beautiful and long lasting. Fiberglass doors, though more expensive than their counterparts, are becoming increasingly popular. They provide excellent insulation and very little upkeep. Steel doors are easy to maintain and are quite cost-effective. They also give a level of security that is unmatched, and are often fire-rated.
Additional Notes
+ The color of your exterior door is a statement about the house itself. It should be considered, though, that lighter colors hold up better over time and will therefore require less upkeep.
+ To ensure a proper welcome, it's a good idea to regularly check both the outside lights and the doorbell to make sure they are working properly.
+ Check your doormat. This is an item that's designed to take a lot of abuse, and after a while it will show. A modest investment at most, it can improve the outside of your house, as well as keeping the inside track free. Besides, you just did all that work on the door.

5 Door Hardware Tips
The main question to consider when buying, installing, or maintaining any door hardware is to ask: How will it be used? In other words, what type of door is it being attached to (exterior, interior, front door, bedroom door) and what is its overall purpose (safety, style, utility)? Many times when something goes wrong with an entryway, homeowners blame the door itself. But a door is only as dependable as its components and most problems occur when the inner workings don't match up to the exterior function. So when on the search for new door hardware, be aware of these 5 simple tips to help in your selection.
Safety First: Locksets are probably the most crucial part of any entryway. You always want your locks to be state of the art (keyless lock systems have grown in popularity) but more importantly they have to be durable. In other words, don't go for high-tech models (keypads, card-swipes) if they require a lot of maintenance. If a lock isn't reliable, then it's worthless. For traditional exterior doors, go for a single cylinder dead bolt, which requires a key outside and uses a thumb-switch inside. If you have glass porch doors, then you may want to go for a double cylinder, which requires a key for both the inside and out. This way, even if a burglar breaks the glass, it's still difficult to gain entry.
The Latch: Along with security, it's always important to consider your handle. Many times interior doors will use simple handle-locks. These door knob locks are easy to bypass because they use simple mechanics—a simple hairpin can be used to unlock it. But since these locks are only there for privacy's sake, they're vulnerability is actually an asset: if somehow you get locked inside a room, it's easy to be rescued. But when it comes to door knobs, the crucial thing to keep in mind is alignment. In other words, does the door open and close easily. Occasionally check to make sure your latches are catching properly. Remember, a door is only as effective as its upkeep.
Tired of your old latches and knobs? Use this link to install new
Door Hardware
The Looks: Make sure to match all your door hardware throughout the house. Though you always want to put function ahead of form, you also want to keep an entryway looking good. A very popular trend, for both the exterior and interior, is to get retro. Nostalgic products, such as glass door knobs or brass handles, are timeless and never go out of style. These little accents can really enhance the look of a home. And since the entryway is the first thing people see, spending time and money on beautiful door décor will ensure that guests get an appropriate first impression.
Attachments: It's not just about latches and hinges. Door hardware can take on all kinds of components. For added protection to your walls, invest in some kick plates and spring door stoppers. To brighten up the entrance, buy an address plate or door knocker. In the bathroom, install a hanger or two for those wet towels. There are constantly new decorations being invented. For instance, if you have elderly guests, then door-levers may be better than handles. Or for handicap residents, remember there are always new innovations in automatic openers.
Maintenance: If a door is to remain functional, then you have to make sure all the inner (and outer) workings are running smoothly. Never leave a lock broken (and if you can't fix it yourself, call a locksmith). Make sure you doors open and close smoothly (if they drag, call a handyman for help). And if there is a squeak in your hinges, don't use chemical lubricant as they may remove the quality finish or specialty coating. Simple soap and warm water will often do the trick, but always consult the manufacturer to see which maintenance option will work best for you.
